Justice Gangopadhyay confirms resignation, will join BJP

Calcutta High Court Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay confirmed his resignation. He said he would join the Bharatiya Janata Party, possibly on Thursday afternoon. “There is a tentative program when I will join the BJP," he said.

He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a hardworking man and criticized bengal ruling party-Trinamool Congress, which inspired him to enter politics while speaking to reporters in Kolkata. He criticized the ruling Trinamool party, which he claimed was responsible for his decision to enter politics. His words shed light on the importance of being proactive in politics to bring about positive change.

Justice Gangopadhyay is widely expected to be fielded by the BJP in the general election after he made headlines last year for discussing a case, he was hearing, in an interview.

There is speculation that he might contest the Tamluk constituency, a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress in the recent elections. The party is winning the seat since the 2009 election.

The seat was previously held by Suvendu Adhikari from 2009 to 2016. He was considered as Mamata Banerjee's right-hand man before joining BJP.

Earlier today, Justice Gangopadhyay told reporters that he would meet the Chief Justice for a courtesy visit and that he had already sent his resignation to the President.

Apart from an interview about a case he heard, in connection with which Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said "Judges have no business granting interviews on pending matters," Justice Gangopadhyay has frequently made headlines with rulings on various issues.

For instance, he accused Justice Soumen Sen of working for a political party earlier this year. Justice Sen had led a bench that stayed an order for a CBI probe into college irregularities. The matter is pending in the top court.

In December last year, Justice Gangopadhyay's order to arrest a lawyer in the courtroom on contempt charges sparked a huge row. The bar association was adamant about boycotting all proceedings involving the judge. He was hearing a case related to the state's Madrasah Service Commission.
